Share Decision Making Committee (SDMC)
What is the SDMC?
The Shared Decision Making Committee (SDMC) at Lyons Elementary is a collaborative group of staff, parents, and community members working together to enhance student learning. The committee provides input and makes recommendations on key areas including budgeting, staffing, curriculum, school organization, and professional development. The SDMC operates in alignment with Texas state law and HISD Board Policy to ensure a unified and effective decision-making process.
Membership & Elections
Faculty representatives are elected by staff members. All SDMC members serve staggered two-year terms. Elections are held each May by secret ballot. If a vacancy occurs during the first nine weeks of the school year, it may be filled by a runner-up from the previous election. After that period, a new election is held to select a replacement.
Meetings & Participation
The SDMC meets quarterly, and additional meetings may be scheduled as needed. Standing committees support the work of the SDMC and meet as necessary to explore specific topics. Parents are encouraged to volunteer on these committees and contribute to the shared leadership of the school.
Decision-Making Process
The SDMC strives to reach decisions through consensus—meaning general agreement and a willingness to move forward after all viewpoints have been considered. If consensus cannot be achieved, the issue may be studied further or decided by a majority vote. The Head of School leads the SDMC process and retains the authority to make final decisions, including the option to veto if needed.
